Lake Fork Creek

The Lake Fork Creek property was donated by Nelle Tobias to provide a permanent niche for flora and fauna. The property is adjacent to Lake Fork Creek near McCall. Nelle Tobias donated 51.5 acres in 1982 and 2.62 acres in 1996.

“…Tobias died April 30th at 98 and she left a legacy greater than cantankerous opinion. She was a tenacious figure in Idaho’s pre-Earth Day conservation efforts of the 1950s and1960s, and she helped the environmental movement long afterward. She helped found the Idaho Conservation League, spoke up in public meetings, wrote letters to congressman, and checks for environmental causes. In part because of Tobias, Congress preserved Hells Canyon, Gospel Hump, the Sawtooth National Recreation Area and the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness. Prodded by Tobias and others, Congress passed the Wilderness Act in 1964 and the Wild and Scenic River Act in 1966. …Tobias demonstrated the power of one person to change the world. She did a pretty good job of it, too.”
